Plaque Dedication Ceremony to Commemorate the Founding of the American Dental Association

Historic ceremony on Old Falls Street USA marks the 167th anniversary of the ADA's founding
Niagara Falls, NY – The Western New York dental community, in partnership with Empire State Development, will commemorate the founding of the American Dental Association (ADA) with a plaque dedication ceremony on Tuesday, August 4, on Old Falls Street USA. The ceremony marks the 167th anniversary of the founding of the ADA, which traces its roots to Niagara Falls.
In August 1859, dentists from across the country gathered at the International Hotel, formerly located at the corner of Main Street (now Rainbow Boulevard) and Falls Street (now Old Falls Street), for a national conference. During the meeting, concerns arose among several attendees regarding unscientific practices and the direction of the profession. Twenty-six dentists departed the conference and convened across the street at Grant Hall, where they established a new organization dedicated to advancing dentistry through scientific principles, professional ethics and best practices.
On August 4, 1859, those twenty-six dentists officially founded the American Dental Association, ushering in a new era of organized dentistry in the United States.
"This ceremony celebrates an important chapter in both American healthcare and Niagara Falls history," said Dr. John Craig, event organizer. "The founding of the American Dental Association in Niagara Falls reflects the city's role as the birthplace of one of the nation's most influential professional organizations, and we're proud to preserve and share that legacy."
The original commemorative plaque recognizing the ADA's founding was dedicated by the Niagara County Dental Society during the organization's centennial celebration in 1959. A replacement plaque was unveiled in 2005 before being removed in 2015 during redevelopment efforts in downtown Niagara Falls.
Working with the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation and Destination Niagara USA, USA Niagara has identified a new permanent location on Old Falls Street USA for the plaque.
